Oct 25, 2014
Another wonderful Reticulata bloom has come and gone. This year's was spectacular, both in term of seeing bloom here in Toronto, as well as in Holland. I'm already keenly looking forward to next year's bloom. It promises to be very exciting!

There were a number of particularly nice new hybrids. My favorite without question in 06-CT-2, followed by 05-EV-2.

I have been told by a couple of bulb growers that an improved yellow is needed to replace Iris danfordiae. Over the years I've had a number of yellows, but nothing that really truly stood out as a true contendor (01-IV-1 is nice and a grower is building up stock of it along with 00-HW-1). Well, 2014 is the year I would say a couple have appeared: 07-CU-3, and 07-AG-3. Both have standards. Time will tell which is the better performer.
[Sadly it turned out a bulb grower was rejecting a lot of my hybrids on the grounds that they didn't have "proper" / normal standards. I don't believe Reticulatas need to have normal standards, but I can appreciate they can make the flowers look a little fuller.]

At long last large-scale sales of White Caucasus, Spot On, and Scent•sational were started this year for the first time. It's taken more than 15 years to get to the point where this could happen; where the stocks were built up enough to sell 15-25,000 bulbs of each. [Aside: Of course in order to sell large quantities, prices have to be fairly low]

I'm not quite as far along in getting my hybrids into the market as I had hoped I would be. Unfortunately, the original Dutch bulb grower I had been working with didn't share the same vision I had. As a result, stocks of some of my other hybrids aren't built up as much I would have hoped they would be -- due to earlier good varieties being rejected and returned, and the fact I didn't have other growers to give them to for a second opinion. The good news is I so-to-speak took out an insurance policy a number of years ago and gave some hybrids to a middle man. Fast forward to 2014 and I'm now dealing direct with the bulb grower: no more middle man.

It was wonderful to see 30m of 00-KN-5 in the field, along with similar quantities of 00-KN-6, 00-BC-1, 00-KV-3, and 00-HW-1
